Is Love Just an Illusion

I find this snippet from Paulo Coelho's Eleven Minutes very catchy.

"She got to the airport, drank another cup of coffee and waited four hours for her flight to Paris, thinking all the time that he would arrive at any moment, because at some point before they fell asleep, she had told him the time of her flight. That's how it always happened in films: at the last moment, when the woman is just about to board the plane, the man races up to her, puts his arms around her and kisses her, and brings her back to his world, beneath the smiling, indulgent gaze of the flight staff. The words 'The End' appear on the screen, and the audience knows that, from then on, they will live happily ever after.

'Films never tell you what happens next,' she thought, trying to console herself. Marriage, cooking, children, ever more infrequent sex, the discovery of the first note from his mistress, the decision to confront him, his promise that it will never happen again, the second note from another mistress, another confrontation and this time a threat to leave him, this time the man reacts less vehemently and merely tells her that he loves her. The third note from a third mistress, and the decision to say nothing, to pretend that she knows nothing, because he might tell her that he doesn't love her any more and that she's free to leave.

No, films never show that. They finish before the real world begins."

It tells some of the truths when a marriage is becoming boring (most of them will turn it like this) and your spouse is going to seek for some excitements not in a "healthy" way but derail to infidelity and betrayal. This actually happens often and filmed in movie sometimes, they are the main contents of the sad love stories unlike the "princess and prince" type Paulo mentioned above.

The behaviors of the unfaithful spouse are changing, and traces of infidelity are opened up to many aspects in the life of a couple, up to a point that the worst detective in the world could tell what is happening. Then, you are facing the problem of "can you handle the truth?" type of paradox, you don't want to know but you can't control yourself to explore more.

Surprise, deny, hide away... but eventually you decide to confront the situation, rise up the problem with your angers. The behaviors of your spouse may change awhile but the recurrent problem will not go away because the "cause" of the problem unchanged: boring life plus unfaithful mindset (this may explain why people don't go to church on Sundays). Your reaction is to revenge and to threat because you want to get back the stolen love. you desire to get back what you possessed.

But the truth of life is that you can possess nothing, not even yourself. You cannot control the sadness, the frustration, the exploding feeling inside yourself; you cannot control yourself to regain a peaceful heart; only your anger controls you and moves you to fight back your love, it is not you but your angers.

Life is repeating and at last, you will find out you possess nothing, not your spouse, your lover, or even yourself, and what will be your reaction? No... and don't know... that is what the silence is resulted.

Afterword:

To love is something so complex and difficult and it makes most people spending a whole life to find it out and to learn. But most of them find nothing at the end because it won't happen if you find no one to connect your heart to; a heart can be mended by another heart only.

So take more care of people now, not your money, not your works, not your toys, not your wild ideas, starting from yourself, your spouse and family, your friends and to all people your encountered.

Other Updates:

1. I found the "Funky Business Forever", though not in PageOne, in Commercial Press bookstore. However, I was busy playing with my new Viewty and Paulo Coelho's novels so I only browsed the book briefly and found that the table of contents are exactly the same as the previous edition "Funky Business". As the authors said they had updated vast majority of the contents, I will check it out later.

2. I put a birthday on facebook as 12 Feb 2007 and several friends sent me birthday blessings. But my apology, it is actually not my real birthday but the anniversary date of my eye surgery last year, you can count on it as my reborn birthday. No matter how: thanks buddies. Happy New Year of Rat!

How does the Brain work? : Retinal Detachment Final

I had checked my RD condition at half-year review 2 months ago. Yes, it happened 8 months so far and everything was stable as the doc said.

However the dot is still exist though I can live with it. My doc said the structure of the repaired retina is excellent and that is so called anatomically corrected. What remained is the adjustment of our brain to adapt the restructuring and disturbance made during the surgery. He also told me no one knows exactly how the way does the brain work and therefore no definite answer for the recovery, but that will be improving over time... be patient with it!

Anyway, I could declare I get back to almost the same as what before the accident happened :- 20/20 acuity; wearing a pair of thinner glasses; putting back on the contact lens; just having some additional aliens living at the very circumference of insignificant visual field.

All in all, God treats me not bad. He brings so many experiences to me and makes my life so unique. I am very happy I could still see the world and read the books I like.

By the way, I got an email from the 2 bald profs of Funky Business saying that the "Funky Business Forever" will be available in bookstore very soon and I joined the Funky Tribe in the books' new webpage.

Stay tuned and would grab the book in PageOne later.

How to Make your Message Sticky?

Sometime ago, I received an urban legend from a colleague as below:

Do I believe it? Yes or No, but I am sure it is sticky to my mind when I walk by KFC.

I then shared my recent reading of Heath's Brother's "Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die".

"Made to Stick" explains why some stories like kidney heist (or this egg and fried chicken message) kind of urban legends so popular and sticky to a lot of people's mind.
The authors believe the best ideas have most of these traits: They are simple, core messages; they are unexpected; they are concrete, credible, and emotional, and they are stories. (SUCCESs)
Simple = can put in a page or 2 minutes talk, don't eat egg or KFC
Unexpected = because it is extremely dirty and harmful to health
Concrete = due to bacterial and virus found, and the use of steroid, etc (lot of concrete evidences)
Credible = which is reported by a chicken farm owner, kind of expert
Emotional = this new finding makes you feel sick
Story = it is a story, not a dull medical report.
That's it! Try to use these skills to make up your stories next time.

Man's Search for Meaning of Marriage

**NEW** The gain level of the MP3 file is readjusted as requested.

I borrow the book title of Viktor E. Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" for this posting in hope of having similar mind provoking effect about this speech I gave in my wedding feast.

Diamond = Eternity?: Retinal Detachment III

Yesterday was really a good day for me.

1. My central vision is back to 20/20 visual acuity, means normal vision.

2. Dr Woo checked my recovery condition, no scar development in 7 weeks, means ninety something percents the RD nightmare will be ended very soon.

The official graduation day will be half year, around early August.

3. Dr Woo referred me to get a second opinion from a famous professor on vitreoretinal surgery about my diamond ring. In short, professor David Wong told me the ring is the buckle but the diamond is an uncommon symptom found in some young people, yes I am still young. He had seen several such cases before and assured me that it will be gone in months. Cool, this matches what Dr Woo told me at the beginning, it will be gone in sometime.

So, tell your wife not to believe the commercial!!!

Diamond is NOT equal to eternity.

Now, I am on 90 percents confidence level of near-perfect recovery.

PS1: If you compare the hurdles I listed out in Retinal Detachment I, you can see it all the hurdles are addressed positively so far, amazing!

PS2: I prescribed a pair of new glasses and expect to back to work around 2nd week of April

My recommendations today:

Both Dr Woo and Professor Wong are experts in vitreoretinal surgery you can access in Hong Kong. If you or your families found retina related problems, I would highly recommend them.

Common retina related problem includes:
- Retinal Detachment, RD (
視網膜脫落)
- Age-related Macular Degeneration, AMD (老年黃斑病變)
- Diabetic Retinopathy, DR (糖尿病性視網膜病變)

Detail symptoms and description can be searched on internet easily.
Smoker and people with diabetic or cardiovascular diseases are in higher risk.
You should visit an ophthalmologist per year for regular checkup starting from your 40s.

Magical Diamond Ring: Retinal Detachment II

If you don't know what the Magical Diamond Ring is, please refer to the previous post about a shadow appears in my peripheral vision after RD surgery. The shadow consists of a big ring encircling the whole peripheral vision plus a dot at 6 o'clock that looks like a diamond ring.

Unknown root cause but some guesses

People have some guesses about the root cause of this shadow and my estimation of probability in parenthesis:

(1) My doctor believes it is vision field blockage due to the buckle indentation, most people cannot see this but me because I had cataract surgery long time ago without IOL (i
ntraocular lens) implantation. So this refractive phenomenon happens. (60%)

(2) The retina needs sometime to accommodate the pressure from the buckle and to recover its function. (35%)

(3) The pressure of the buckle malfunctions the retina. (~5%)

(4) Stroke of optical nerve. (0.01%)

The probability of (3) and (4) are slim as the dark spot can adapt to ambient lighting, i.e., the spot becomes brighter when I move to brighter environment and it becomes darker in dimmer places. This means the retina in the dark spot area should still have function. I can't eliminate (2) but I can find a sound explanation after detailing the phenomenon with an optical diagram, keep on reading for the description.

Here comes the explanation.

Scleral buckle is a silicone band encircling the eyeball to make an inde
ntation to help squeezing the subretinal fluid out and help your retina flatten and reattached to the choroid.

My doctor used a higher buckle in my case which is more preferable when the tears are many and big. I appreciate his doing but this produces a deeper indentation as well.

Shape and size of some buckles can be found here: buckle catalog and more buckle catalog

What is the problem of higher buckle or deeper indentation?

Let me draw an optical diagram to explain this. Remember I had my IOL removed without implantation so the refractive error could only be corrected using exterior lens, i.e. spectacle or contact lens.

If you look into the diagram carefully, it is pretty self-explanatory. The bold blue line represents the deeper indentation caused by the higher buckle. When normal glasses is used, part of the object is blocked by the buckle indentation (blue color) which creates a blind spot on the retina. If I change to use contact lens (red color), I could see the same object smaller as well as seeing a wider vision field (grey color). This agrees with my experience when I wore contact lens before the buckling surgery. If we look into the effect of closer lens (contact lens in this diagram) against buckle indentation, we could see the closer lens may reduce the blind spot area, about half in this diagram.

This explains the possible visual field improvement using contact lens (better) or IOL implantation (best), and it is the counter proof of why the patient with IOL removed would be more susceptible to see the blockage of higher buckle.

I hope this expensive diamond ring disappears soon with contact lens or IOL implantation.

While for the scar development progress, I may have more update after revisiting my doctor next week, stay tuned!

Flashes and Floaters: Retinal Detachment I

It is now about 4 weeks time since my Retinal Detachment surgery, and I could virtually restore my macula vision (the central vision that helps us to read and see the details), however my peripheral vision is still having a black dot and a ring shadow which is quite disturbing. My Ophthalmologist said that it may fade out in 4 to 8 weeks so I have to see how it goes. Anyway, it is still a good luck for me the retina can be reattached because RD is not a minor problem especially if you had eye surgery or cataract before.

My RD surgery was a complicated one as the doctor marked in the insurance claim, an 1.5 hours surgery turned out to be 2 surgeries in 4 hours. Because the tears were quite a lot and the vitreous traction was big so I had been treated with Scleral Buckling, a surgery to mount a silicone band around your eyeball and make an indentation to push the retina back to the choroid; and a surgery called Vitrectomy to remove the pulling vitreous.

After overcoming the first hurdle on surgery, I have to pass more gates in 3-6 months.

- result of the reattachment (excellent)
- infection after surgery (no problem)
- scar development leads to redetachment (good so far, but need to monitor 3 months)
- fade out of shadow in peripherals (not good but it can take time or forever)

Therefore, I am now undergoing low protein diet to prevent scar development and patiently wait for the gone of the shadow. Anyway, it is already very lucky if the macula vision is excellent and the retina is holding in place firmly, others are only bonus.

Another worry begins with the another eye, which has 20% risk today.

I may write up a more detail record about my RD experience when I recovered completely. The only comment today is IF YOU FIND FLASHES OR FLOATERS IN YOUR VISION, GO SEE AN OPHTHALMOLOGIST AT ONCE, hours count for how good the vision can be recovered. My case was the surgery happened within 1 hour the RD had been confirmed by the doctor, similar to the urgency of car accident.

Thanks to my ophthalmologists, my wife, my families, and those who pray for me on this hard time. Love and joy last though the fate is tough and cold.
